Good to know you're back to blogging. I'll look forward to hearing more about the wheel. My sister-in-law spins. I'll pass this on to her.

Just catching up on my very intermittent blog reading. If I were in your shoes I would a) tell them I don't care what everyone else does, if there's no time for a foreign language then they can give him an extended school day. And 2) I'd ask the school to do an APE/PT/recreational therapy assessment (totally legit related services under IDEA--must be provided in 60 calendar days if requested in writing) in order to determine how to deliver PE instruction. They are not just supposed to fit Toby into the box of how they do things, they have to provide instruction that meets his unique needs. So they could create a small class with Toby and maybe a few typical peers who could do adapted sports with him (time issue? extended school day!). Or they could have a recreational therapist or PT attend inclusion PE with him and adapt the activities. What does his PT think would be the dream option for PE? Could school provide PE in a private setting (didn't he do sled hockey?) after school as his PE requirement and then boom, time for foreign language!

Oh, and I'd go for option 2 in your shoes. Because the teaching assistant might be able to be the "elevator repair assistant" or the "accessibility problem solving assistant." Also, if you're really concerned that he's going to be in the hallway a lot (and I see why), ask them to send you weekly reports on any instructional time he misses. That way if it's getting in the way, you'll have data to advocate with.

Love, your friend, the cranky spedmom. :)

I know what you mean about startitis -- I have a baby blanket that is within three squares of being knit and then needs to be assembled, and I thought I'd try to finish it before Christmas, when we'll see the nephew it's for, but somehow today I found myself at the knit shop buying two skeins of yarn for a prayer shawl for my boss, who has lost both parents this year and was close to the founder of our company, who passed away yesterday. So I'm knitting like a fiend trying to get them both done. Fortunately, we're done with most of the Christmas shopping. I hope your break is relaxing and your holidays are wonderful.

I think I have a recipe for the chard stalks in Sophie Grigson's Eat Your Greens (a great recipe book if you can get it). I'll look it up for you. They are braised with black olives...
